This case depicts a self-initiated expatriate’s career journey in Japan, an ethnically and linguistically homogenous society. Shirley, Chinese born in China, developed her love for Japan since childhood. A few years into her career after completing an undergraduate degree program, she ceased an opportunity to join a 5-year project in Japan. She had to overcome various cross-cultural and language barriers during the project but eventually decided to stay and continue pursuing her career further in Japan.
